Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy is produced by harnessing the heat that is naturally generated by the Earth’s core and using it to generate electricity. This is typically done by drilling deep into the ground to access hot water or steam, which can then be used to power turbines that generate electricity. The process is renewable and sustainable, as the Earth’s heat is constantly being replenished.
- Shallow geothermal energy (up to 1.5 km) at very low temperatures (less than 50 C);
- Deep geothermal energy (up to 2 km) at medium or high energy (reaching temperatures up to 150 C), which allows the production of electricity;
- Very deep geothermal energy (5 to 10 km) at a very high temperature (up to 300 C).
Geothermal energy has many advantages. It is weather-independent, local, renewable, and uninterrupted. Additionally, its production has a small environmental impact and produces no CO2.
In the long run, geothermal energy can help society transition away from a fossil fuel economy without aggravating global warming. Due to their abundance of thermal energy, volcanic environments are frequently where geothermal power generation is most productive.
How It Works
A geothermal power plant works by harnessing the natural heat that is generated by the Earth's core. This heat is typically accessed by drilling deep into the ground to reach hot water or steam reservoirs. Once the hot water or steam is brought to the surface, it is used to power turbines that generate electricity.
There are two main types of geothermal power plants: dry steam plants and flash steam plants. In a dry steam plant, steam from the geothermal reservoir is used directly to power turbines. In a flash steam plant, hot water from the reservoir is brought to the surface and then rapidly depressurized, which causes it to turn into steam. The steam is then used to power turbines.
After the steam or hot water has been used to generate electricity, it is typically injected back into the geothermal reservoir to be reheated and reused. This process is renewable and sustainable, as the Earth's heat is constantly being replenished.
